Growing up in Northern California digging a garden often meant digging up ancient human tools such as metates. In my project “Three Metates,” I poured plaster into three of these Indian grinding stones. The humble shapes that emerged are containers of time. They express in their simple curvature all the labor and time it took to create such depressions in volcanic stone. I am interested in the time it took to create these tools and also the time elapsed between their use and their contemporary excavation.
